LITERARY ELEMENT: MOOD

Mood: The atmosphere or emotional condition created by the piece, within the setting. Mood refers to the general sense or feeling which the reader is supposed to get from the text. It does not, as a literary element, refer to the author’s or characters’ state of mind. Note that mood is a literary element, not a technique; the mood must therefore be described or identified. It would be incorrect to simply sate, “The author uses mood…”
Example: The mood of Macbeth is dark, murky, and mysterious, creating a sense of fear and uncertainty.

Acceptance (n.)- Favorable reception; approval.

Alienation (n.)-Emotional isolation or dissociation.

Ambition (n.)-An eager or strong desire to achieve something, such as fame or power. The object or goal desired: Her ambition is the presidency.

Avarice (n.)-Immoderate desire for wealth; greed.

Beauty (n.)-The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality.

Betrayal (n.) – To give aid or information to an enemy of, commit treason against: betray one’s country.

Choices and Consequences (nouns)-The act of choosing or selecting and, because of that choice or selection, the outcome, the effects and/or influence of an event, especially as relative to an individual.

Coming of Age (n.)-Reaching maturity, respectability, or prominence.

Courage (n.) –The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.

Deliverance (n.)-Rescue from bondage or danger

Discovery (n.)-
Discover (v.)- To notice or learn, especially by making an effort: got home and discovered that the furnace was not working. To be the first, or the first of one’s group or kind, to find, learn of, or observe.

Envy (n.)-A feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire or the possessions or qualities of another.

Faith (n.)-Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.

Family (n.)-Two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another, and reside usually in the same dwelling place.

Home (n.)-An environment offering security and happiness. A valued place regarded as a refuge of place of origin.Honor (n.)-Good name; reputation.

Identity (n.)-The set of behavioral or personal characteristics by which an individual is recognizable as a member of a group.

Justice (n.)-The principle of moral rightness; equity; fairness.

Love (n.)-A deep, tender, ineffable (indescribable and inexpressible) feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, place, or thing, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness. An intense emotional attachment.

Loyalty (n.)-A feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection; allegiance.

Power (n.)-The ability or official capacity to exercise control; authority.

Pride (n.)- A sense of one’s own proper dignity or value; self-respect.

Redemption (n.)-Recovery of something pawned or mortgaged.

Respect (n.)-To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem

Salvation (n.)-Preservation or deliverance from destruction, difficulty, or evil

Trust (n.)-Firm reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing.

Truth (n.)-A statement proven to be or accepted as true; reality; actuality. Fidelity to an original or standard.

Vengeance (n.)- Infliction of punishment in return for a wrong committed; retribution.
